It's been quite awhile since my last post. As some of you may know, I am currently on a 2.5-week trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, partly business and partly vacation. With the wonder of technology, I am able to get online often using my tiny Eee-PC900 to do some work, and also to keep in touch with friends back in Ottawa. The integrated webcam on my Eee-PC900 was quite a marvel in itself too!
For the first several days, jetlag and weather were the 2 main obstacles towards my adjusting to the environment here. Coming from a near freezing temperature in Ottawa to a "plus" low-thirties (degree C) in Kuala Lumpur, with at least an 80% humidity, is not really trivial! I have just barely conquered these problems, and now, I am getting ready to fly home in a few days...

TN2008: Thank you for your generous support!
I recently checked my total fund raised for the Tour Nortel 2008 event of May 4, 2008, which totalled to $285, including online and non-online contributions (as charity for CHEO (Children Hospital of Eastern Ontario), Ronald McDonald House and Candlelighters). I wish to thank you all for your generous support, especially, in financial sponsorship, prayers and encouragement. My TN2008 web page is still available for viewing: https://www.cgiottawa.com/ERDS/Donation.aspx?evt=9&i=150645
Unfortunately, however, on that Sunday morning, my event was rained out, so I did not run. It had been raining quite heavily since the night before, and it did not stop until about 9:15 am that morning. By then, the roads were extremely wet, and thus, they were quite treacherous to rollerbladers, especially on roads with moderate to steep slopes -- my route consisted of such slopes on Corkstown Rd, and I believe that they named this road quite descriptively, no doubt!
So, I had a good rest that morning, a restful morning after my busy day helping out at a wonderful wedding event the day before.

TN2008: Late start in training
Well, there is only a few days left before the event, and I have just barely begun my training -- note that I'm certainly not a capable inline skater, although it's only 12km. At present, I am only at about the 70% mark in my needed endurance level for the run. Much of it is attributed to my busyness in the past weeks (it is the Income Tax season here) and the inclement weather earlier this month. To add to this, I will also be helping out as an usher in my friend's wedding this coming Saturday (so, no training on that day, and a possible late nighter just before the 10 am Sunday run!!). Still to-do, I have to overhaul my rollerblades with new wheels, bearings and a brake pad.
Anyway, if you still wish to sponsor me for this event, my TN2008 web link is:

TN2008: My stake is raised higher
I had just raised my stake for the Tour Nortel 2008 fund-raising: My goal is now $700. I believe that I should attempt to raise more for the benefit of these charities, for a great cause. My TN2008 web link is:
https://www.cgiottawa.com/ERDS/Donation.aspx?evt=9&i=150645
On the physical training side, I still have not quite started yet. Well, the paths that I usually train on are still icy and wet. Hopefully, with the good warm weather, it will quickly improve. Also, I still have to overhaul my rollerblades, i.e. the wheels, bearings and brake-pad replacements. My to-do list. We shall see...

Tour Nortel 2008...
It's time again. Yes, now that my XC skiing spree here is over (almost), I will be participating in the 12km Tour Nortel 2008 fund-raiser event in inline skates for CHEO (Children Hospital of Eastern Ontario), Ronald McDonald House and Candlelighters, on Sunday morning, May 4, 2008.
The CHEO charity website is http://www.cheofoundation.com/
If you wish, you may sponsor me by making a pledge of any amount online (please click on the link below), all of which will go to the listed charities:
https://www.cgiottawa.com/ERDS/Donation.aspx?evt=9&i=150645
I will be posting updates of my preparation for this event regularly here.
In advance, I thank you very much for your generous support!

XC skiing and one more blizzard
In Ottawa this weekend, we are faced with yet another blizzard. This one is said to be the Mammoth Storm, a 36-hour storm. At this point, we already had 360cm of snowfall this winter, and is the second highest snowfall in the recorded history of Ottawa (the record is 444cm set during the 1970/71 winter season). We are now expecting another 40cm more this weekend.
But it is somewhat enjoyable for people who love snow. I went cross-country (XC) skiing alone in a 4.2km wooded trail near my home this past Thursday afternoon (during my time-off from work). It was only my second time (although I had done several down-hill skiing in the past). I am a slow XC skier, and I got lost in the woods (after one other skier in front of me sped off). I tried calling a friend for help, but my cell phone died due to a low battery problem (for out in the cold, cell phone batteries don't usually last very long, and out in the woods, the phones typically require much more power to work). It was just prior to sunset when I finally got out, totally exhausted but relieved. I was in the woods for about 2.25 hours, and was glad to not meeting a black bear!

Yet another blizzard
The very first day of February here is marked with a full blown blizzard! Stayed home on a Friday evening, and blogged.

New email address
I have finally resolved my new email account problems. It is now working, and an announcement has been mailed out via emails. Please contact me for this (I know spammers will gladly be looking forward to this, but they won't find it here). Well, my next challenge, to improve my new web page when time permits.
Also, I'm thinking about getting more physical exercises these days, but I didn't have time or just wasn't motivated enough to do swimming or skating at this point. Maybe, joining a jiu-jitsu class would be a more disciplined endeavour...

New domain name and web page
I have finally obtained a new domain name, as part of my new software development project and business plan. Also, my web page is now up and running, though very crude looking... will continue to work on it this week.
Still to be resolved with the hosting service provider, my email accounts (yes, I have set up 3 email accounts) under that domain name are only partially working at this moment. When they are fully resolved, I will announce it -- stay tuned!
It's still very windy outside -- imagine, gale-force gusts of up to 72km/h for an entire day! But, it's still quite a warm temperature (above the freezing mark) for a mid-winter day in Ottawa, so no complains. Thus far, this winter has been quite abnormal anyway -- check it out: http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climateData/hourlydata_e.html?timeframe=1&Prov=XX&StationID=4337&Year=2008&Month=1&Day=2

Happy New Year 2008!!
Happy New Year 2008!!
Time flies, and it's now 2008. I have been busy in the last few months training for a new technical skill (for an upcoming work contract), besides working on my new business plan when time permits. It is now catch-up time on administrative things.
December 2007 was a busy time for me too, with several year-end dinners and banquets. My Christmas season was filled with a carolling activity with the EACO Christmas Eve carolling team to Queensway Carleton Hospital, and helping out at EACO during the Christmas Eve candle-light service. Then, I am off to Toronto for a New Year celebration with family members and friends.
For 2008, I am hoping for an even better year, a year that will bring freshness, both spiritually and physically. Likewise, may 2008 also be a wonderful year filled with fond memories for you too!
